The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe was published in 1950 as the first of C.S. Lewis’s seven-book fantasy series The Chronicles of Narnia. As the most renowned title in the collection, Lewis’s series’ debut has been adapted for film, television, the stage, and even radio. While it’s possible to see The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe as a cipher for the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, to its author, the book was more speculative fiction than allegory. Lewis considered the novel to be a “supposal”: what the story of Christ might look like in a different world. Despite its undeniable religious overtones, the book is more than a simple retelling of the Christ story, and explores themes such as childhood, the relationship between humans and the natural world, and the nature of reality.
